The 25th meeting of the Adobe User Group the Netherlands on December 7th had the theme ‘London Calling’: with 4 creative agencies from London on stage. As you might know, a creative agency needs to have a showreel. And the showreels of the top-knotch agencies on stage this day were indeed amazing. If you missed this meeting, be sure to see these guys in real life if you have the opportunity. For now, you can read through the review of this inspiring day and follow the links to find showreels.

B-Reel – Lins Karnes & Mattias Ekendahl

B-Reel, second time on stage at Adobe User Group The Netherlands, starts of explaining being a hybrid company: merging online, tv and real-life installations. And with all the positions being staffed in-company, closely working with B-Reel films, they believe this makes it possible for them to keep consistency over different media (online & film) and do cool interactive research & development.

See the Honda Civic “The Experiment” game, where different windows have to be placed in the right order to create the right chain-reaction. Sort of like the old game The Incredible Machine. B-reel highlighted all the challenges they had to overcome during the production of this application: with 150 movie clips, 1000+ possible reactions, preloading all different movie formats, HTML5 on all different browsers (that keep updating) and many more. The solution was written in 35819 lines of Javascript code. And the project shows they pulled it off, as you can judge yourself here.
They also shared a pretty cool 3-d interactive ‘eels’ game they made, where users can control an eel with their mobile moving around on a 3D structure. Highlighting again that in-house R&D is important to create new things, and is possible when everyone works in-house.

Unit 9 – Tom Sacchi

Since 1996 Unit 9 is representing 14 interactive directors to make highly interactive online experiences together with their 70 person staff. The presentation gave a birds-eye view of some great interactive projects they delivered.

Here’s the interactivity they produced:

Drive against your Facebook friends in satellite view (you can drive on the actual Google Maps roads with your Mini!)

Choose which movie you want to see with a slider (because it’s up to you to choose your flavor: of film & of Mentos gum)

An interactive tool to calculate how many slaves work for you (so you can tell your favorite brands to stop using slavery in creation of their products)

Walk in a live Google streetview and interact with the environment and people (to find a Mercedes)

Play dodgeball online against top dodgeballers LIVE! (Did you know the latency was not in the internet connection, but in the people picking up the balls to put back in the actual ball-shooting-machines you control via the website.)

Play an interactive manga of Morimoto — creator of Akira and the Animatrix (interacting only via input through your webcam)

An iPhone racing game where you get a ‘boost’ when you are actually eating a carrot (Now US eats carrots like junk food)

What’s the message? Use very simple interactions, just click and you get something. And if you keep it interesting & fun, people will keep on clicking away.

In this spirit they now also make apps & games with simple interaction. See: Nano Panda for iPhone, iPad and android.

The Mill – Andy Orrick & Tony Volpe

The Mill = Visual Effects in TV & Films, illustrations from 1990 to 2011. Now with 850 people. The good part of the presentation was a wowing experience of visual experience bringing to life a world of animation, production, after effects that speaks to the imagination. Just look at their showreel and get blown away.
During the presentation the guys on stage gave the insight. in why this company makes these creations: The Mill aims to create invisible effects, and they aim to entertain people with storytelling.

Since 16 months The Mill has a new digital team, to bring all this storytelling experience to the interactive world. For instance Meerkovo, where a lot of technology to serve the whole meerkat world to a million Facebook users, combined with the storytelling. Or combining VFX with people dancing themselves on an Absolut Vodka bottle. Or my favorite, a competition of Red Gate for Database Administrators, to win an actual trip to space through an interactive 14-episode sci-fi. Oh, by the way, they also made their own life-size multi-touch device, just like us :).

AKQA – Nick Bailey

Nick presented the Heineken Star Player, an app for Heineken to make the UEFA Champions League more interesting.

AKQA explains that they break-down the question of their client, starting with facts, integrating technology and coming up with the perfect solution for the target audience. With the Heineken Start Player, you play and earn points to predict how match moments will play out live during each Champions League match. You play against your Facebook friends.

And their happy to share their learnings:

Football matches include a surprising amount of nothing

“Live” doesn’t necessary means live: latency can be 3 to 20 seconds! (AKQA researched this)

Canadians don’t understand football

In the process they coined the terms ‘dual screening’: a person watching TV on one screen and interacting socially on another.

Round up

For me, it was the last Adobe User Group meeting to be part of the way I was now. All the speakers were amazing. Don’t miss the next Adobe User Group meeting. Keep a watch out on: www.adobeusergroup.nl.

As we at Quince know: touch devices are here to stay. Which means we need to keep looking at how designing and programming for (multi)touch devices works. The Adobe User Group meeting ‘Touch Me’ touched on this subject last week with a list of interesting speakers. My view is that touch is not something ‘new’, it’s technology finally catching up to how users want to use tools: directly, not indirectly through a mouse for instance. That’s why kids understand it intuitively. Let’s see how other people experience touch:

Martin Tirion of Microsoft started and explained the Microsoft vision of touch, including Windows 8 and the new surface table, which not only is multi-touch but can also scan objects placed on the table: every pixel is also a camera so to speak.

Next, the whole crowd was involved in a social play experiment of Daniel van Gils of KamerBlauwLicht.

Everyone needed to work together to win a cake. Daniel explained his vision that games can be used to create social interaction, and touch devices need to be used to engage together: play at the same time.

After the break Jankees van Woezik and Dirk Schluter of FONK showed how to bring a classic table-top game to life. Together with Royal Jumbo they created iPawn, a real pawn to play with on your tablet. According to the short survey amongst the audience a sure to be holiday season hit.

Jack Zwanenburg of Edenspiekerman started with an overview of touch through-the-years and ended with SoundPrism, a great music app they developed. His view: take in mind what the user is already able to do and make your interface around that, instead of porting an interface literally to a touch device.

Remon Tijssen of the Adobe XD did the closing session. He stressed that the fluid user experience of an interface is the most important thing in using an app on a touch device. He showed some of the latest Adobe apps for touch devices that underline this vision.

After all that inspiration we can’t wait to start designing and developing more & more (multi-)touch applications that make a difference in-stores and during events. Touch is here to stay!

Putting some Chelsea Football Team as players always looks nice on your video.

3D projection mapping displayed the aliens on a wall and the players had to kick footballs at them as they moved downwards like real aliens do of course. If a player hit their target with a football, the alien will disappear and points are gathered. Have a look at the video below, not only it is a nice game, also the video is pretty nice marketing material.

Sometimes you just don’t know what information you need to place on your interactive display. There is so much you want to tell, so much the customer wants to know. Now here is the solution.

Don’t show any information, just replace the info with a real life person and add some video conferencing. Like a help desk, but interactive. Just watch the introduction:

FaceLook is a real-life posting application that is based on facial-recognition (Face.com)

The participants can post comments and pictures to their own Facebook page. How? just by looking at the screen. The kiosk recognized their faces and uploaded everything to their pages using only their faces as identification.

Watch the video below to see the FaceLook kiosks in action:
